Deleo and Hooper began making music together in 2016. As Booty EP, they released their first collection of songs in 2018 but as the project evolved, they wanted a new name. “Doohickey cubicle” was written on a shared notes document Deleo and Hooper use to jot down ideas although the origin of the phrase remains hazy to the pair. Against the advice of their friends, Doohickey Cubicle was the name they chose and in 2021, they released Don't Fix Anything ;), their debut album under the new name.
The thing about Doohickey Cubicle is that they are a bit silly at face value. Their name brings to mind the messy, trinket-filled workspace of a quirky corporate employee and their self-directed music videos are filled with delightfully bizarre visual storytelling: in the video for the Super Smeller track “Constant Stim,” which features Eliza Niemi on harmonies, a round of golf goes awry when a snake attacks. Compounding their playfulness is the fact that their sound is cool and fun, blending multi-hyphenated pop with their love of nu jazz.
Altogether Doohickey Cubicle comes across as unbothered but they actually care a lot. Don’t mistake their chill exterior for indifference: Doohickey Cubicle create a direct line from their heart to yours.
